What can happen if you try to literally apply the religious scripts?

In a discussion board on facebook one blogger raised the questions which to believe religious scripts or scientific publications. Although the question is very tricky, there is no correlation between the two areas.

I believe that the several attempts to mix religion with science since the days of Mostafa Mahmoud program “Science and Faith”; “Al Elm Wal Iman” has contributed to create such confusion although the two sides cannot be mixed.

Additionally trying to find scientific evidence in a religious script is useless, especially by the fact that the nature of these scripts and what they address is totally different from science.

It should also be noticed that these scripts were written in a language that matched the period in which they were delivered so in a sense close to the understanding of the people of this period. The message was an oversimplified message that did not have any scientific content like the history of creation six days and the seventh God rested; this was the first area of conflict with two theories the Big Bang and the evolution. People try to stick literally to the days in the human understanding rather than use it as metaphor.

Religions have one core to guide ethics and set codes of conduct, so in this context they become absolute as they set the black and white, the right and the wrong.

On the other side scientific discoveries are dependent on the knowledge acquired and technology available at the time of discovery and the drafting of the theory, it is dependent on observation and research; in that sense it becomes relative and variable.

Such variability has been seen in the relativity theory advanced by Einstein that revolutionized the old Newtonian physics.

When I was in school we learnt that the smallest particle in an atom are the electrons positron and neutrons, today at Cern this might be further fragmented due to the high speed of the accelerator these particles might further disintegrate into smaller particles, which will change scientific findings

There is a deliberate mixing between the holy verses and the religious interpretations, while the first are absolute sacred and divine the second is totally human and accordingly is not sacred, it bears the bias of the interpreter and his limited understanding and as such should always be separate from the religious text, however this deliberate attempt, tries to confer immunity to the works of clerics.

There is also on the other hand a deliberate mixing in the media between Islam and Moslems. The negative attitude towards Moslems/Arabs is wrongly described as hostility to Islam. The west is stereotyping Moslems as being retarded and violent is not based on a study of the religion but on an observation of the behavior of Arabs/Moslems. This pattern leads to a wrong conclusion that this is caused by the religion itself.

What is going on in Egypt? Clerics are winning ground by playing on the emotions of masses using religion as a tool.  Facing such wave the government proved to be very weak,  it is even playing the same game. We are in religious auction, everyone is raising the stakes.

To add to that there are two attempts and both are extremes in the handling of religious scripts, one that is totally anti religion discrediting the holy texts on the account that some writings are not in accordance with current knowledge, the other extreme is sticking very hard to the scripts defending to letter what is written.

Both sides forget that religion is there to regulate human behavior and draw the difference between what is good and what is evil, what should and what should not happen, the newest of them is 1400 years old. All religious scripts were written to attract the human kind to adopt the religion and its code of ethics and accordingly as was stated earlier it had to adopt the language and the situation in which they were delivered.

What history has proven that the three Abrahamic religions have survived together and were transferred through generations without really the need of protection, once principles are adopted and expressed in behavior; they are automatically transferred to the next generation.

What we are livin in Egypt today is simply said: Chaos! It is Chaos of in-guided minds, who have been taught by the “state” or let us say the “ONE” or unilateral way! That, I believe, is what happens, within Transferable periods, on the way to multilateralism. However, to take the further step to be literally transfered, you need a leader or a compass to guide. We miss the leader or the compass.. and that is the main problem we face now.. and the current situation will remain till either those come or we end up in a full disaster!

The science is variable ,theoretically we have no scientific theory that is right 100% , the right theme of any scientific theory is variable , we use to search about the valid truth in science not the unlimited trusted truth , the valid is variable because any scientific theme may by right now according to its hypothesis which is the data that exists during the time of the scientist’s research ,it may be changed after sometime , but the religion bases are stable forever , if we use the variable( science) to prove the stable ( religion ) , it will be a great danger that is, when the variable changes the religious bases will lose its believable power.

Dr. Joseph I agree with you, religion is absolute and cannot be measured against something that is variable. but as religion has become a big trade everyone trading in this tries to prove that his merchandise is the best by trying to find a supporting proof of the scripts in literally limited scientific discoveries

it is a real pity that when someone like Khaled Montaser tries to attack this mixing he puts himself under serious fire

A fascinating discussion is definitely worth comment.
I think that you need to write more on this topic, it may not be a taboo matter but typically people do not talk about
these subjects. To the next! All the best!!
