The Pyramids of Guiza

While driving on the ring road sometime ago I suddenly saw the pyramids emerge in my horizon. Although it is not the first time for me to see them but I cannot stop myself from being fascinated by these massive structures. One very nice sentence that I heard in the sound and light, I can’t remember verbatim what it is, never in history has the straight line acquired such beauty and magnitude.

Going back to my fascination, first it is due the massive structure that has survived till now for more than five millennium, second the accuracy with which it was engineered to the point that it was replicated several times, although the credit goes to Imhoteb the engineering genius of the step pyramid which was the predecessor of all pyramids, the Guiza ones are marvelous and they represent the peak of technology in pyramid building pyramids before that were graded pyramids as a core then covered with fair cladding to smooth the grades, the Cheops Grand Pyramid was a different structure first as far as I know it is the only pyramid with rooms inside and not beneath, second it is not built around a core of graded pyramid but the whole structure is pyramidal, the fourth dynasty marked the peak of pyramid building technology, none before or after matched the size and accuracy.

I looked at Wikepedia to discover that the Great Pyramid of Giza at 146 m was the world’s tallest building from c. 2570 BC to c. 1300 AD almost 4000 years no building on earth matched its height, Wikipedia also added that the accepted values by Egyptologists bear out the following result: 2,400,000 stones used ÷ 20 years ÷ 365 days per year ÷ 10 work hours per day ÷ 60 minutes per hour = 0.55 stones laid per minute
I even went to a book I read about the pyramids by the late Jean Philippe Lauer some 25 years ago to refresh my memory, although Lauer is considered to be the reference for the Sakkara pyramid complex, his writings about the pyramids in general are very scientific and reliable. The total estimated weight of the blocks has been estimated by Lauer to be 6,5 million tons
I was always impressed by these magnificent buildings, for me such beauty could have been built only with a lot of love for the pharaoh. The accuracy and meticulousness in its orientation, in setting one layer of lime stone after the other, to a total of 215 to 220, are signs of a great population and a grandiose civilization. When you consider also that the height of each layer was reduced one layer after the other when at the base it was 1,5 m to reach 0.65 with an average of 0.55. The pyramid was faced by 115500 pieces of limestone cladding. These figures can give us an idea about the magnitude of the human endeavor involved. This was described by Vivant Denon the archeologist who accompanied Napoleon in Egypt as “le dernier chainon entre les colosses de l’art et ceux de la nature” or in other words the the last link between the colossi of art and those of nature, it is clear that the structure of the pyramids has been inspired by the mountains
The precision of such building is observed in the accuracy of the joints that do not exceed 0,5 mm, and its quality is definitely proven by the fact that it stood the test of time
Unfortunately precision, dedication and quality virtues previously expressed in the ancient Egypt were mutated in our genes through generations to sloppiness and lack of dedication
It took patience and 20 years of hard work to erect such edifices another virtue that is disappearing leaving the arena for extreme impatience
